Using a target objects Material ID property is an easy way to manage distribution for multiple panel types.

Populate:Panels – Mutations: Populate/Skip Face Selection

The Selected Faces mutation scans the target surface modifier stack for face selection. You can either populate or skip those faces.

Populate:Panels – Mutations: Populate/Skip Nth Face

With the Populate/Skip mutation you can limit paneling to odd/even faces, or create regular gaps. This gets interesting with multiple panel elements on the same target surface. To create a checkerboard pattern, just set the first panel to populate every 2nd target face, while the other panel skips it.

Quick Start – First steps with Populate:Panels

Open Populate:Panels from the main menu bar, ‘Tools -> Populate:Panels…’.
The fastest way to get started, is loading a panel preset. With the current beta version there is only one preset available, ETFE Cushions.

When picking a target surface, keep in mind that only quad faces will be populated.

You can also pick any 3dsmax geometry or spline object as a custom panel object, as shown in the next video:

The Framing System

There are two panel types available in Populate:

  • Custom Panel Objects
  • Framing Systems

Here is a quick introduction of the Framing System.

  • Framing Systems work with all kind of poly faces, not only with quads, as Custom Panels.
  • The frame width is always constant, not relative to the face area, as it works with insetting the face.
  • Good performance, works with AutoUpdate.

Right now there is only one Framing System module available, “Simple Frame + Glass”, in later versions there will be different profiles, including round, filleted and multi layered systems.
