Introduction

Populate:Panels is a scripted plugin for Autodesk 3ds max. It assists in designing and modeling patterns distributed over free form surfaces.

With a smaller number of panels, many operations can be done in real time, however, it is also possible to calculate a large array of panels and collapse them to a single mesh.

This is the basic functionality of Populate:

Provided are two objects:

  • Panel Object (blue tube)
  • Target Surface (orange poly surface)

After picking both objects and pressing “Process”, the following will be generated:

The source panel object is populated onto each quad poly face of the target surface. Every panel is deformed individually, to fit each target face.
